Bob's Autumn Almanac

I've spent a lot of time wandering around this fall getting used to life in the suburbs. This has afforded me a lot of time to shoot fall color: most of the time at f2.8 to emphasize a single detail in the photo. What I found most interesting in this photo is the out-of-focus areas, also known as the bokeh. I especially like the heart-shaped yellows in the background. Below, there a shot of some dead thistles in beautiful late afternoon light.

One morning at Random Order . . .

. . . on Alberta Street in Portland, I saw this perfectly distressed chair. I just had to shoot it wide open @ f2.8!

It's Gonna Be a Good Mornin'

I think the coffee even tastes better @ f2.8!

See what happens when you shoot @ f2.8? This was shot with a Canon 100mm stacked onto a Canon life-size converter for extremely high magnification. Shooting this at f2.8 gives this a razor depth of field (area that is in focus) and creates excellent bokeh (blurring of the background).

Bud, Bursting 2

Sometimes it pays to shoot wide open at f2.8. Not only does it accentuate the focus on the bud in the foreground, but it also creates nice bokeh in the background.

Reflecting on Electricity

I saw this power pole reflected in a puddle this morning and decided to take a quck shot of it. I liked how the concrete was creeping into the frame, destabilizing the reflected dream of electricity.

Astoria-Megler Bridge

Heavily Photoshopped version of the Astoria-Megler Bridge just outside my office. I shot this as the fog was quickly flowing back out to sea.
